With over 1,100 species of hardy perennials, and 150 native plant species, the Alaska Botanical Garden is the place to experience the abundance of the summer arctic growing season and to learn about flora native to southcentral Alaska. From May through September (and occasionally into October) you will find flowering plants and shrubs in two perennial gardens, a formal herb garden, an alpine rock garden, and our wildflower walk. The reindeer farm offers a variety of enjoyable Alaskan activities, including reindeer tours, a gift shop, horse rides, and nearby hiking trails. Feed and pet these majestic northern animals, and you may even see elk, moose, and blacktail deer.

The Alaska SeaLife Center offers an unrivaled, up-close and personal experience with Gulf of Alaska marine wildlife. Witness a 2000+ pound Steller sea lion gliding past underwater viewing windows, puffins diving in a carefully crafted naturalistic habitat, and harbor seals resting on rocky beaches. Alaskan king crab, sea stars, and the Giant Pacific octopus also await you, as well as a whole variety of intertidal creatures and deep sea fishes.

Leopards, Tigers, seals, wolves, wolverines - the list go on and on. Visit the Zoo. Stop by and say hello to Maggie while you wander about viewing sall the animals. The Zoo is open year round, Mon - Sun 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. They are closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

On the shores of Turnagain Arm, surrounded by mountains and hanging glaciers, Big Game Alaska Wildlife Center is the perfect place to learn about Alaska wildlife. Drive through in the comfort of your own vehicle or walk through to photograph and learn about the animals, the park and the history of the Portage Valley area.

The Bird TLC Education Program has over 25 wild birds available for live presentations. Trained volunteers will take these carefully selected non-releasable wild birds of your choice to your school, organization and events to conduct informative programs on avian ecology and conservation. The Eagle River Nature Center is the gateway to the Chugach State Park. Only 45 minutes away from Anchorage, the center offers interpretive displays, programs, visitor information and an abundance of outdoor activities include spectacular wildlife viewing, hiking, and self-guided nature tours.

Salmon Viewing Area Hours Late May through September, 8:00 AM till 10:00 PM. The salmon viewing area is adjacent to the hatchery and provides opportunities to see king salmon from late May through July, and coho salmon August through mid-September. This viewing area can be accessed from Post Road during salmon viewing hours. In addition, Elmendorf Hatchery provides tours for school and community groups in the summer months, and salmon viewing in fall and spring. Tours average about 45 minutes, and the hatchery requests at least one week's notice. Limited times are available for individual tours. Call the hatchery at (907) 272-0065.

The greenhouse as tropical greenhouse is open for public viewing 8am to 3pm seven days a week, is disabled accessible, has a fish pond & small aviary, has self guided tour books available and is especially suited for elementary school-age children
